The Sultanate of Oman is a country of amazing scenic contrasts. Lush, green oasis emerges as if by magic from endless desert dunes. Colonies of turtles inhabit long, sandy beaches lapped by the emerald Arabian Sea, with the backdrop of rugged and seemingly impenetrable mountain ranges.
The capital, Muscat, is encircled by lofty peaks and guarded by ancient Portuguese forts. The commercial heart of the city is bordered by the splendid corniche and is also home to a maze of souqs. Close by is the old dhow harbour, launching place of many dolphin-spotting trips.
Two well preserved 16th-century Portuguese forts, Al Jalali and Mirani, guard the entrance to Muscat, and the city walls contain three beautifully carved original gates. The town's old houses and narrow streets are overlooked by the hillside Mutrah Fort.
